A nationwide research of the New Ukrainian School Concept (hereinafter NUS) implementation process in General Secondary Education Institutions was conducted 15 – 25 July 2019 by the State Scientific Institution “Institute of Educational Analytics” with the participation of the State Scientific Institution “Institute of Education Content Modernization” and with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The purpose of the research was to capture the progress of the NUS reform in the first year of its implementation, as well as to identify the links between a number of components of the NUS and the expected learning outcomes of students.

The sample of the research was formed on the basis “city-village”. The survey respondents are elementary school teachers who taught in grade 1 in 2018/2019 and parents of students who studied in grade 1 in 2018/2019. The survey was conducted using an online survey in Google Forms. The research found that, in general, the interaction of students and adults (teachers and parents of students) on the principles of partnership pedagogy gives good educational results, contributes to the formation of a positive attitude to school and study from first graders. Maintaining an interest in learning and wanting to go to school is one of the challenges that the NUS concept is about to overcome. The study found that children liked and more liked going to school. One of the main reasons why a child is happy to go to school is a liked teacher, and also new friends. An indicator of a successful start of the NUS is the attitude of parents to the new school, who for the most part evaluated their child’s educational achievements in different competencies at the end of the first grade as “very good” and “quite good”.

The findings of the study will form the basis for determining the correlation between the components of the NUS to eliminate the risks and improve the quality of secondary education.
